DELTA FORCE 2004

This weekend the 2004 class of Delta Force begin their leadership mission. 19 people who want to become more involved in their community have signed on to understand more about leadership and about the inner workings of the systems that make up our community. 


Those 19 people include: 

Clay Peterson, Wells Fargo; Caren Crawford-Anderson, Crawford Funeral Homes; Alan Yeck, M-TEC at Bay College; Kathy Hatlaben, Superior Resources; Darla Falcon, City of Gladstone; Jennifer Gasman, Delta Plaza Mall; Liza Collins, Daily Press; Andrea Pearson, Chamber of Commerce; Aimee Bisson, AAA Michigan; Amy Berglund, Michigan Works; Chad Engstrom, Marquette General; Cheryl Ohman, RRN; Brent Madalinski, Bay College; Lynn Johnson, Daily Press; Alan Larson, retired; Keith Marenger, MeadWestvaco; Mark Moore, Newport Door; Steve Lillie, UPPCO; Kim Peterson, City of Escanaba.


The objectives of Delta Force are to:

• Identify participants with potential for community leadership

• Acquaint these leaders with community issues, resources, and opportunities

• Increase participant’s leadership skills

• Provide opportunities to network and exchange ideas with each other and   community leaders

• Assist participants find volunteer roles in the community

• Encourage graduates to continue their involvement in service programs


Delta Force participants spend at least one full day each month from January through October exploring in depth the aspects of leadership and the community. In addition, they have homework assignments like interviewing key leaders, sitting in on board meetings, observing characteristics of leadership in public settings, riding with public safety officers, reading various books/articles/case studies, journaling, and writing their own personal mission statements. 


Full session topics include presentations, panels, role playing, field trips, inventories, and readings. Topics for these full day sessions include: Opening day where we look at the five elements of leadership that we will weave throughout the whole series as well as personal styles; leadership day and community service; economic development; education; government; justice and law enforcement; environmental awareness, health and human services, media and communications. Graduation will be held in October in conjunction with the Chamber’s annual dinner.


Delta Force participants can number 20. If this program appeals to you or to someone you serve with at work or in the community, please call the Chamber at 786-2192 to find out more about joining this group. New participants must be able to participate in the February 26th, Leadership and Community Service Day, and all other sessions in order to qualify. Sessions after today’s are held the last Thursday of each month. 


Sponsors are found for many aspects of these workshops. Key sponsorships are provided by the Bay College, Daily Press, Delta Chamber, Delta EDA, Michigan Works, and MeadWestvaco. 


Just like the sponsors, facilitators and presenters represent a wide group of community leaders. Each key facilitator will have anywhere from two to twelve community partners helping them with their content day. Key facilitators include: Loren Woerpel and Brad Mantela, Vickie Micheau, Tom Smithson, Kathy Jacobi-Collins, Deb Doyle, Marc Tall, Tari Calouette, Linda Hirvonen, Roger Good and Nancy Kolich, Bill Pistulka and Susan Pitcher.
