Governor Jennifer Granholm has appointed two Upper Peninsula business people to her Council of Economic Advisors. Gary W. Erickson of Marquette, Vice President and COO of Upper Peninsula Power Company, and Vickie Micheau of Gladstone, Executive Director of the Delta County Area Chamber of Commerce, were named to the council, which has been established to assist the governor in crafting a comprehensive economic strategy for the state.
THE TASK
The council will leverage the joint power of the state's pre-eminent economic experts from academia, business and government to build upon Michigan's position as a leader in the national and international economy. The task of each council member will be to gather information on current and prospective trends, evaluate whether current Michigan policy is achieving or impeding economic policy objectives and develop and recommend policies that will increase diversification and diminish economic fluctuation.
"This will be a challenging role," said Erickson. "Because Michigan's economy depends on Michigan jobs, it's critical that we put our experience and expertise to work in finding new ways to create and retain those jobs."
Micheau said the Delta County Chamber of Commerce and UPPCO have a history of working together on business development and in other areas. She noted UPPCO's joint efforts with the chamber on the Delta County Partners in Education program in particular.
"Gary and I will be representing the unique interests of the Upper Peninsula on this council," said Micheau. "We will be looking at replicating in the U.P. the same type of discussions and actions taking place on the Council of Economic Advisors."
